CHD Urges FCC to Scrap Plan for 4-Fold Increase in Power Limits for Wireless Devices
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is moving forward with a proposal that would quadruple the power limits for wireless devices operating on 5G networks—and health advocates are sounding the alarm for families concerned about electromagnetic radiation exposure.
What's Being Proposed
On July 1, the FCC released a report proposing to increase the power limits for mobile and portable wireless devices from 1 watt to 4 watts. This change would specifically apply to devices operating in the C-band spectrum (3.7 to 4.2 gigahertz), which is used for 5G technology. The FCC plans to consider this change at its July 22 meeting.
What's particularly concerning to health-conscious parents and homebuyers is that the FCC proposed this change without conducting a public health analysis of how it could affect people's exposure to wireless radiation, according to Miriam Eckenfels, director of Children's Health Defense's Electromagnetic Radiation & Wireless Program.
Why Health Advocates Are Concerned
Children's Health Defense (CHD) submitted a letter on July 14 urging the FCC to scrap the proposal. Eckenfels stated that "a mountain of science has accumulated over the last 30 years that shows exposure to wireless radiation has negative health impacts."
CHD is also pointing to a 2021 court order that required the FCC to explain how it determined that current radiofrequency (RF) radiation exposure limits adequately protect people and the environment. The organization argues the agency should comply with this order before considering any increase in power limits. The current exposure limits date back to 1996 and have not been updated despite significant changes in wireless technology.
