RF Animal Cancer Review Is #1
A major scientific review examining radiofrequency (RF) radiation and cancer in animals has become the most-downloaded paper of 2025 for a prominent environmental health journal, signaling growing public interest in understanding potential health effects from wireless technology exposure.
What the Research Found
The systematic review, led by Dr. Meike Mevissen from Switzerland's University of Bern and commissioned by the World Health Organization, points to evidence that RF radiation exposure causes cancer in animals. Published in Environment International last April, the paper was downloaded approximately 28,000 times in 2025 - putting it in the top 1-5% of all downloaded academic papers, according to Anthropic's AI assistant Claude.
The research team included eight members from six different countries, and their findings have already been cited at least 35 times in other published work. This level of attention far exceeded other papers in the journal - the second most downloaded paper had about 21,500 downloads, while the third had just 11,000.
Controversy and Conflicting Views
Not everyone agrees with the findings. The German radiation protection office (BfS) quickly rejected the cancer finding and published a 14-page response stating they "strongly disagree" with Mevissen's analysis. Another group led by Australia's Ken Karipidis, vice chair of ICNIRP, called Mevissen's analysis "flawed." Both organizations have long maintained that RF radiation cannot lead to cancer in animals or humans.
However, other scientists have supported the findings. Igor Belyaev and Suleyman Dasdag from ICBE-EMF endorsed Mevissen's review in a letter to the journal editor earlier this year.
For health-conscious families concerned about EMF exposure, this ongoing scientific debate highlights the importance of staying informed while taking practical precautions. While scientists continue to study these effects, parents might consider simple steps like keeping devices away from children's bedrooms at night or exploring options like EMF shielding paint for nurseries or bedrooms. It's also worth understanding the science behind common concerns - our guide on 5G and EMF myths can help separate fact from fiction.
As this research continues to generate discussion among scientists and the public alike, the unprecedented download numbers suggest many people are seeking reliable information about potential health effects from our increasingly wireless world.
