French Health Agency Under Fire for EMF-Cancer Report

France's national health and safety agency, Anses, is facing intense criticism from electromagnetic field (EMF) advocacy groups following its November 2025 report concluding that cell phone radiation does not cause cancer. The report's findings, which were widely publicized through France Info radio with the message "cell phone waves do not cause cancer," have prompted accusations of political influence and industry bias.

Dr. Marc Arazi, president of the Alerte Phonegate association, claims the report reflects a "political takeover of Anses that occurred several years ago," suggesting the agency is now giving free rein to technology industries. Critics point to concerning factors about the agency's independence: it operates under joint supervision of multiple government ministries, its director is appointed by the President of France, and recent government decisions have reportedly added economic considerations to the agency's scientific assessments.

Advocacy Groups Withdraw from Dialogue

The controversy has led to a significant breakdown in communication between Anses and EMF advocacy organizations. Multiple groups, including Alerte Phonegate, Robin des toits, and Criirem, have withdrawn from the agency's "dialogue committee" and refused to participate in public consultations about the report. Priartem – électrosensibles de France has taken legal action, filing an appeal to annul the report and requesting intervention from the Committee on Ethics and Conflict of Interest Prevention.

Frédéric Furlano from Robin des toits expressed the most extreme position, stating: "The only thing we expect from Anses now is its dissolution." This level of distrust suggests a complete breakdown in confidence between health advocates and the agency meant to protect public safety.
