New Tool Helps Compare Phone Radiation Levels

For those concerned about electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure from smartphones, RF SAFE® has launched SAR Compare, a web-based tool that allows users to compare Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) values between different phone models. SAR measures how much radiofrequency energy is absorbed by body tissue when using a wireless device.

The tool works by letting users select phone brands and models to view side-by-side comparisons of SAR metrics. According to the interface, "lower is better for each metric," making it easy to identify phones with potentially lower radiation exposure. The comparison feature appears to be optimized for mobile use, comparing two devices at a time.

Important Limitations to Consider

The tool's developers acknowledge that SAR measurements have limitations. They note that "SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) is one compliance metric and does not capture all real-world exposure scenarios." Additionally, actual exposure can vary based on several factors including signal conditions, phone accessories, and individual usage patterns.

For privacy-conscious users, the tool offers an option to import dataset JSON files for offline use, storing data locally in the browser without uploading to external servers. This feature allows users to compare devices privately without sharing their research habits.

While SAR values provide a standardized measurement for comparison, health-conscious consumers should remember these numbers represent controlled testing conditions rather than real-world usage scenarios.
